Alaska Moose hunt September 2005

North Pole, AK in cooperation with the US Army Corps of Engineers Chena River Project

Special thanks once again are due to North Pole Coffee, as always they donate the exceptional coffee for the hunters and volunteers for the hunt and with 3 hrs of sleep a night the coffee is very welcome. We also owe a special thanks to Sam Mindham and his crew at K & L distributors (Budweiser) for their assistance and participation in another great hunt.

We owe so much thanks to so many people throughout the North Pole and Fairbanks community, they welcome us with open arms every year. The Fairbanks North Star Borough transportation department once again made this all possible as without them we could not efficiently move everyone and all their gear, the use of their wheelchair bus is a godsend.

Breakfast the day before we began the grueling week long hunt, this day is devoted to purchasing licenses, food etc and attending the BBQ sponsored by the Corps for all hunters and volunteers.. On average we return at night to the hotel around 11:30 pm and must wake up around 3am to be in the woods before sunrise. We do this for 5 days straight, this is the most grueling hunt you will ever enjoy.

Tim Feavel decided he wanted to view things from a wheelchair for a while. Jack Franklin put him through it all, step up doorways (up and down), a run through the mud, Tim also had to try and answer the phone that was placed very high on the wall and out of reach to most wheelchair users and he also realized he could not use the emergency eye wash station if necessary

Jack, moose rack and one of two Polaris Rangers used to transport hunters to their blinds. The blinds used were all constructed by Ken Krieg over the few months prior to the hunt, wooden and concrete floors and framed construction using local birch trees and then surrounded by tree limbs. You can drive up to them and in some cases completely miss them unless you know what you are looking for

Jack Franklin's bull moose was taken within 45 minutes of getting in his blind on our opening morning. Finally success after 2 years of great times but no moose. Yes, that is Jack having a well deserved mandatory congratulatory beer (Bud of course) WELL before noon. Ken Krieg and Gary Rudolph are missing from this photo because they chose to stay in their blind hunting all day long, roughly 17 hrs or so

I was stationed with Bob while in the Air Force in Alaska over 20 years ago and we were the best of friends and we had not seen each other in over 7 years. Bob still lives in the area and showed up after shooting a moose the night before in an area next to where we were hunting. Needless to say it was a VERY welcome reunion and we have already made many plans to get together again VERY soon. L-R Bob Hill, Doug Warren
