Steve Sanford Receiving the Distinguished Service Cross from General Peter Pace, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during a ceremony at Ft. Wainwright, Alaska. February 2007 This is a page I am very proud to post, Steve has become a very good friend and hunting partner of mine. Although being the modest guy that he is he won't admit this but he is in fact a true hero. Definitely a man to be proud of and honored for his duty. Double click for larger image

Fort Wainwright soldier receiving combat medal
for actions in Mosul Staff Report Published February 21, 2007 A Fort Wainwright soldier will be presented the Distinguished Service Cross on Thursday for his actions in Iraq. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Peter Pace will present the award to Pfc. Steven Sanford, who served in Iraq with the 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry in the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, which has since been renumbered. Sanford is being awarded the medal, the second-highest military decoration the Army has, because of his actions during a firefight in Mosul, Iraq, on Nov. 19, 2005. During the battle, Sanford, who was shot several times, continued to help his wounded comrades by performing CPR on fellow Stryker soldier Pvt. Christopher Alcozer, who died in the incident. About 11,400 soldiers have received the Distinguished Service Cross since the award was established by Congress in 1918. The award is second only to the Medal of Honor and is awarded for extreme gallantry and risk of life in combat with an armed enemy force. During an awards ceremony Thursday, Pace will also present Silver Star Awards to Staff Sgt. Michael Barrera and Pfc. Joshua Joseph for their actions in the same Mosul battle. http://newsminer.com/2007/02/21/5383/ Reprinted from the Fairbanks Daily News Miner
