Unbelievable
describes it best. For those of you who have not had the opportunity to
go after Sailfish, it’s an experience you wont soon forget. One minute
your sitting back in the hot tropical sun napping, (Jim & Carl…) and the
next thing you know all hell breaks loose. FISH ON!!!!….RIGHT RIGGER,
RIGHT RIGGER!!!!!… LEFT FLAT LINE!!!… DOUBLE HOOK UP, DOUBLE HOOK UP!!!!
The captain is going completely out of his mind yelling out instructions
and guidance while the crew is jumping around the boat like it was on
fire. Once you have one of those things hooked, the battle begins. These
monsters can weigh in anywhere from 60 lbs. to over 100 lbs. and you have
to try to control them the best you can on 30 lb test. You fight until
your arms burn and then you fight some more. Once that fish is to the
back of the boat and the mate has grabbed the leader, only then can you
rest. But for how long???
I have to say that
this year’s tournament was one of the high points in my life. Jim and
Carl are top-notch guys. Between the three of us we took the second place
slot. No simple task considering that we were up against some world-class
fishermen who do this kind of thing for a living. Not bad for three
rookies.
The icing on the
cake was working with the guys from the PVA Heritage Fund. Doug Warren
who has become one of my very best friends made this trip possible for
me. Thanks bud. I owe you one. Joe Fox, Joe Jr., Ken, General West,
Brook, Carl, Jim, keep up the good work men. It is an honor to be
acquainted with every one of you.
Saving the best for
last, a warm and genuine thank you to the wounded veterans who joined us
from Walter Reed hospital. Without the sacrifices you have made and the
courage that you express, we would not have the freedom that we often take
for granted. Thank you to all the veterans on this trip for your
service. It means a great deal to me.
Now, for anyone
reading this that has not contributed in some way to the PVA Heritage
Fund, get off your ass and do it today.
